Sadly the use of bad fonts for subtitles seems more the norm than the exception in Tibetan music videos. At least this one’s not as bad as the Chinese-originated practice of using dark-color subtitles with white outlines, which is horribly illegible, or of bogus kerning where the shabkyu pushes the suffix consonants over by several spaces. A good library of Unicode Tibetan fonts together with proper OpenType support in popular subtitling software would make a big improvement to Tibetan videos I think..

You’re right, Rich. There’s a general penchant for glitz over functionality, whether it be video subtitles, webpage layout, or Flash objects.
For DVD removable subtitles, I have used an older, discontinued application called DVDMaestro under Windows XP. Apple bought up the company several years ago and the morphed the program into (Mac only) DVD Studio Pro. You can likely still find the old Windows version on P2P networks. If the Uniscribe engine is updated in XP, DVDMaestro will support Opentype lookups. I would be curious to know what other modern subtitling programs work with Unicode Tibetan.

I’ve been involved with MPlayer, the popular Linux (and nowadays on other OS’s as well) movie player, for a long time. Our text rendering support has had a record of being very bad, but recently support for .ssa/.ass subtitles with advanced styling was added, and I’ve been pushing for proper OpenType support along with that. If it ever happens, MEncoder (the movie encoding program that accompanies MPlayer) would be a decent choice for subtitling in Tibetan. The library code (libass) is also made available standalone so it could potentially be used in other projects as well; I think there’s already a Windows DirectShow filter based on it but I may be mistaken.

The MPEG standard is now supposed to include Unicode and OpenType fonts for text streaming - so hopefully we’ll see support for this start to appear before too long.
The fact that this is now part of the MPEG standard is also a good excuse to start pressing developers of streaming video applications to support it.

Sadly, the MPEG4 standard is full of all kinds of random things that make it unfeasible (and usually uninteresting) to implement the whole thing, so that implementations end up just covering particular subsets. That’s not to say that OpenType fonts and proper subtitling is uninteresting, but rather that implementors are likely to shove it into that pile of ‘junk’ in MPEG4 when they have to decide what to support and what to omit. Here’s to hoping I’m wrong though.

I know Microsoft made a press release when OpenType was added to MPEG4 like it was a really big deal - If they are the ones behind it, then there is hope it may get implemented in Windows Media Player and other MS Software - and, if that happens, I guess it will make it more likely that developers of other software will decide to support it too.
Whoever was behind this I think it should be seen as a very useful feature - especially if people want to produce MPEGs with subtitles in multiple languages. I should think it would be about the most efficient way to store multi-lingual text in MPEG files.
Maybe we should encourage people to sent “feature requests” to the developers of their favorite video streaming apps.
Now that they own it, I also wonder if Adobe have plans to support OpenType in Flash etc.? - I think that it would make a lot of sense for them to do this since they were the other party originally behind OpenType - and they are converting their whole type library to OpenType. It would also make Flash integrate better with other Adobe applications.
